The Reds dominated Merseyside Derby with a 3-1 home win as Mane, Coutinho and Origi found the net

Sadio Mane opened the scoring on eight minutes and Coutinho's brilliant finish restored the hosts' advantage after Matthew Pennington had levelled on his first start of the season.

Divock Origi, who replaced an injured Mane in the second half, made the points safe, moving Liverpool above Manchester City, who face Arsenal on Super Sunday, one of two games in hand they hold on Jurgen Klopp's side.

The German becomes the first Liverpool manager to win his first three Merseyside derbies.

What a start from Liverpool! Firmino played a one-two with Mane, who shrugged off the challenge of Davies to collect the ball and burst towards the box. Coutinho took two defenders away with his run and Mane fired through Pennington's legs and into the far corner. Super finish.

Pennington levelled for Everton in front of the Kop just in his first appearance of the season. A corner from the left was flicked on by Jagielka and, after Williams' effort was blocked, it fell in the middle for Pennington to smash home from six yards out.

But the hosts retained their lead just after 3 minutes. Coutinho picked up the ball around 40 yards out, skipped away from Gueye's tackle and then got into the box and cut inside Pennington before curling a shot into the far corner.

The Reds scored another goal after halftime. Coutinho was again involved as he slipped a pass past Williams for Origi, whose shot was straight down the middle of the goal from the edge of the box, and somehow beat the keeper. Poor defensively from Everton and really poor from Robles.
