 The experienced midfielder made his first Premier League start under Jose Mourinho yesterday afternoon as Manchester United recorded a 3-1 win over Swansea.

Carrick had only appeared in Mourinho’s starting XI’s three times before their trip to Wales - with the Red Devils winning all of them.

And his good record continued as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s double and Paul Pogba’s wonder strike ensured Mourinho’s men ended a run of four games without victory in their trip to the Liberty Stadium.

Carrick, 35, has found himself out of favour under the Portuguese boss with the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Pogba keeping him out of the side

And it seems his age is the main reason Mourinho struggles to select him on a regular basis.

“I would love to play him every game but that is not possible,” Mourinho said.

“Why? For the same reason that I cannot go to the gym everyday anymore! He started today and he played very, very well.”

The likes of Paul Scholes and Michael Owen, who both played alongside Carrick during their time at Old Trafford, have called on Mourinho to play the England international in recent weeks.

”I said at the start of the season I thought Carrick was the best person not only to play but to compliment Pogba,” Owen insisted.

"I just think Michael Carrick is an old head and experienced. He’s a good passer of the ball. He’s happy to do all of the dirty work that Paul Pogba needs.

"I’m just totally baffled how he’s been given so few minutes.”

Carrick will be hoping for a second consecutive start when Manchester United host Arsenal after the international break.
