THE MESSAGE

God knows His children by the way they live in this ever-changing world. The world you live in today is like sinking sand. Men who do not have their orientation in God will continue to shift their allegiance and commitment in line with this unstable world.

This is not so with God and those who truly follow and worship Him. God hates instability. His standard for following Him will never shift. Steadfastness is an important attribute of God and a great Christian virtue.

A virtue is a normal trait in someone that generally leads to an acceptable behaviour or conduct. A Christian virtue then is a Bible based mode of conduct that pleases God. It entails knowing what is good, doing it and avoiding what is wrong.

In walking before God, you must understand that He is not interested in sacrifices of offerings, tithes, praises, and so on that have no conviction of obedience to His word. With God, there is no alternative mode of behaviour except what will send a pleasant aroma to His holy nostrils.

These are the things He has shown you: purity, love, humility, self-control, faith, courage, mercy, forgiveness, truth, being generous when there is a time of need. These are some of the biblical definitions of Christian virtues. Every Christian who has heaven in focus must be defined by these emblems.

Beloved, I advise you to examine yourself and see if you are still in faith. Regular self-examination will help everyone of us in the race of salvation and eternity. We must not be complacent. We must keep improving on our Christian values and make becoming like Christ our highest priority. This will make it difficult for the enemy to distract or discourage us in the race. I pray that you will finish strong and finish well, in the name of Jesus.

THE MESSAGE:

It is written, 'Not that we love God, but that he loved us, and sent his son as a propitiation for our sins' (1 John 4:10). We continue our discussion on love for God and man. The greatest commandment and the greatest identity of a believer is love (John 13:35). Our discussion today will centre greatly on love for man or love for your neighbour.

The second answer according to Mark 12:31 is: "Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself." Who is my neighbour? From the parable of the good Samaritan, my neighbour is the next person to me. Those people around me that I can show love to. They include parents, maids, colleagues, boss, etc.

How do I love my neighbour? The second part of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:12-17 confirmed in Romans 13:8-10 shows us how a believer can love his neighbour. They include: show respect and honour to your parents, don't murder anyone, abstain from adultery, avoid theft, don't tell lies about other people and avoid covetousness. All these are also part of the characteristics of love as written in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Love is patient, kind, does not envy, not rude, not proud, does not brag, does not keep record of wrongs done against it, does not rejoice when others fail, does not get easily provoked, love never give up on people, believe all things, never loses hope, never quits.

How do you love your neighbour as yourself? You and I are very good at taking care of ourselves. We want the best for ourselves. To love your neighbour as yourself, you need to love yourself by receiving the love of God. You can only give what you have.

To love your neighbour as yourself as commanded, you need to be filled with the Spirit of God. Love is a fruit of the Spirit. If you are yet to be born again, you cannot fulfil this command because you don't have the Spirit of God.

Love for your neighbour is the barometer with which to measure your love for God.

THE MESSAGE:

The greatest commandment of all is love. Love is the greatest identity of a believer (John 13:35). There are three kinds of love; the God kind of love (Agape), love between husband and wife (Eros) and love between friends and acquaintances (Phileos). The kind of love being referred to here is Agape, which means putting others first. This kind of love emanates from a life of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

One of the scribes asked Jesus in Mark 12:28 a question. He said, "Master, which is the greatest commandment?" The Lord replied with two answers: "And thou shall love the Lord. . ., this is the first commandment and the second -- thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself." There is none other commandment than these. Love is the greatest commandment upon which other commandments stand.

What does it mean to love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength? It means loving God with all you have. This kind of love is more of doing than feeling. It requires that you demonstrate your love in some practical way.

How do you demonstrate and manifest this kind of love? Exodus 20:1-7 gives practical examples that were also corroborated in the New Testament. Your love for God will manifest in your loyalty or allegiance to God and your separation or dedication unto him (Romans 12:1).

Beloved, God first loved you and me. He demonstrated His love to us while we are yet a sinner. God is love. Do you really love God? Where resides your loyalty? Are you fully committed to Him? Are you part of people that bring disrepute to His name? Repent today and embrace His love.

Repent and rededicate your life if you're His son or daughter. If you are not, surrender your life to Him and reciprocate your love to God.

THE MESSAGE:

The word "mentor" does not appear in the Bible, but there are so many instances of more mature and more experienced characters in the Bible, who acted as mentors to those who were younger or newer in faith. Moses mentored Joshua (Deuteronomy 31:23), Elijah and Elisha (1 Kings 19), Naomi mentored Ruth. Jesus mentored His apostles, and Paul mentored Timothy (2 Timothy 4:1-8).

What is mentoring? It is being a coach to a willing and ready individual. A mentor is a wise and trusted counsellor or teacher who has recorded a significant level of achievements in his or her field. In our Memory Verse, Apostle Paul spelt out mentoring as his leadership model -- very simple: "Follow my examples as I follow the example of Christ."

Who is your mentor? Some persons claim to be Christians but their mentors happen to be big time politicians who speak in fables, wear exquisite attires, live big and ride ostentatious cars. Gehazi wanted to have the type of clothing like that of the Syrian war leader. He was under the tutelage of a great mentor, from whom he would have inherited great anointing, but he chose to have a worldly mentor in his heart. He ended up a leper throughout his life and generations after him were not spared. They became sad reminders of this ugly episode in Bible history. Your vision determines who mentors your life. Your lifestyle and character would be impacted by your mentor's vision and character.

A mentor guides by being a good example. Apostle Paul counselled Christians in Philippians 4:9 thus: "Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you." Do you behave like your father in the Lord whose life is Christlike or a boss in the office who depends on his scheming ability? This is the counsel of the Lord written in Hebrews 13:7, "Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation." You must not follow a satanic leader. Learn to be wise to choose a kingdom mentor and be a good example like Apostle Paul in your mentoring and life. May God help you, in Jesus' name.

THE MESSAGE:

Almost everyone has a tendency to be angry at least once per week. It may be minor frustration with another or being irritated with your kids for not putting some things in the right place. Some parents live with daily anger and hurt the feelings of their children at times, which may not be repairable. Children usually put such into their mindset and perhaps grow with it.

Some parents and their children are in a constant battle of outburst of anger and abusive words. If you look back into your childhood, you would probably remember being hurt by your father or mother; and every time you think about such, it brings you anger.

Anger is a problem for every Christian but sinful anger is what our Maker rejects (Ephesians 4:26). Parental anger sometimes leads to child abuse, divorce, health problems like heartache, heart attack, high blood pressure, ulcer, etc.

Colossians 3:8 enjoins you to put all your anger and abusive speech aside. Similarly, Ephesians 4:26 says, "Be ye angry and sin not, let not the sun go down upon your wrath." Jacob's anger against his two sons, Simon and Levi, made him to issue curses on them. Their offences were that they were aware of the rape of their sister, Dinah and manhandling and sale of Joseph into slavery.

Don't be like Jacob. Become like Christ. You will be angry and develop hatred for sin. You can control your anger by instantly turning it off when it wants to control or overwhelm you.

Parental anger has several consequences and we should avoid getting into uncontrollable anger that can lead us to destroy God's precious gifts to us spiritually or physically. You will achieve this when you always remember that anger hurts your child. Children of angry parents are less empathetic. The effects of parental anger can continue to impact the adult child on depression, spouse abuse, career and economic achievement.

As a parent, God expects you to control your anger. The Holy Spirit is your helper in this regard. Be calm when interacting with your children. Break destructive family legacies around anger. Feel more prepared to cope with your own anger and that of your children. I pray that God will help you, in Jesus' name.

Anger doesn't solve anything; it builds nothing, but it can destroy everything.

MESSAGE:

Growing godly children involves depending on God in prayer. It is possible to pray and not really depend on God, but it is not possible to depend on God without praying. In Luke 18:1, Jesus emphasised the need to persist in prayer until the answer comes.

Keep on praying for your children and keep your requests constant before God as we live for Him day by day. When you live by faith, you are not to give up praying for your children. Your prayer for your children will make a long impact on them in their present life, tomorrow and their future. When time of difficulties arises, don't worry or fret. Instead of worrying, pray and let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns about them.

The Bible is replete with examples of parents that prayed for their children. Abraham prayed for Isaac and he prospered. Jochebed prayed for Moses and he was not killed with the verdict of the king. David prayed for Solomon and God was with him. His fame was known throughout the whole world. Isaac prayed for Jacob. He later became Israel and the father of 12 tribes in Israel.

Beloved, it is very important to pray for our children day and night. Later, you will marvel on what God will do in their lives. If Samson's parent had intensified effort praying for him, he wouldn't have died with his enemies. Unfortunately, his parents gave up. You must not give up on your children, no matter how difficult the situation may be.

As a praying parent, here are some areas in which you can target your prayer: (1) Pray that they will come to know Christ as Saviour in life (John 17:3) and pray for your grandchildren too. (2) Pray that they will be willing to make a total commitment to the Lord. (3) Pray that He will not only be their Saviour but Lord of their lives as well. (4) Pray that they will have a hatred for sin (Psalm 97:10). (5) Pray that they will be caught when guilty (Psalm 119:71) and that bad behaviour in their lives will be nipped in the bud before it gets so cheaply ingrained.

So, rise up now and pray for your children.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

Your children can run from you, from their upbringing, from the church. But, they can never run away from your prayers!! Keep praying.

PROPHETIC WORD FOR TODAY:

YOUR CHILDREN SHALL CLING TO THE LORD IN ALL THEIR TRIALS; YOUR PRAYERS ON THEM WILL NOT FALL TO THE GROUND IN VAIN, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

THE MESSAGE:

One major condition to access God is purity of heart (Psalms 24:4a). Purity means condition or quality of being pure, freedom from anything that defiles, contaminates or pollutes. For a Christian, the life of purity means a life that is free from contamination of the world, life free from condemnation or guilt, life free from sin. Purity has to do with what you choose in every part of your life. It means choosing to please God than anything or anyone else.

Learning from the text above, Paul issued to Timothy (and by implication you and me) a great reminder to set an example in all he did and said and how he did them by the help of the Holy Spirit. God has called you and me to set example in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith and purity.

Purity inside out, purity in behaviour (1 Timothy 5:2) and in spirituality (1 Timothy 5:22) are all required of you as a believer. This type of purity can only be achieved through the purifying blood of Jesus and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

To live the life of purity, you must be born again, be filled with power of the Holy Spirit, continually and consistently read and teach others the scriptures and put to use the gifts of God in your life.

Have you been washed in the blood of the Lamb? Have you been baptised in the Holy Spirit? Are you growing in purity? If yes, do not be weary in well doing. If no, you have another opportunity before you. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

Beloved, we are in the world of technology today. No doubt technology has advantages and disadvantages both in the society and homes, not excluding Christian homes. We have all manners of technological devices that surround us, ranging from laptops, tablets, phones, etc. Each new technological device brings with it the good and bad influence, depending on how well you put them to use. We should endeavour to put God first in all things. After all, God is the giver of knowledge. Why then should we place these technological devices above our Creator and the God of the universe?

All devices, social media and so on are to help make life easy and make communication and transactions faster. However, they do replace some crucial natural interactions between persons at different levels in the society.

The Christian home, marriage and family fabric have been adversely affected. Communication, which is a central factor in marriages is fast becoming a force. Couples relate more with Sms, WhatsApp messages and other means than creating quality time to relate physically with one another. It has become so serious among couples as well as parents and children.

Many Christian couples are physically together but emotionally separated. They watch different programmes. Each has his or her own area of interest. As a result, there is little or no room for harmony. Everyone is on his or her tablet or laptop or TV set. Children are busy pressing phones, surfing the internet; in the process many fall into different satanic traps unknown to them. Many Christian children have fallen into untold errors: pornography, joining bad gangs, robbery, terrorism, cultism and occult practice and violence through the internet and social media. Refuse the TV from becoming a devil's box in your home!

These and more are the consequences of the misuse of technological devices in our homes, instead of using them to educate ourselves and children and propagating the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Husband and wife, how strong is the bond of love between you, in spite of technology? Is it not better to develop their unity and oneness, and develop mutual interest in each other's area of interest? By doing this, the devil will not succeed in separating you under the disguise of technology. When you make use of all these devices and appliances for the betterment of your family and your home, your marriage would not fall apart, in Jesus' name.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

DANGERS OF FALSE PROFESSION

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Timothy 3:1-17

MEMORY VERSE:

1 Timothy 3:5 "For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?"

THE MESSAGE:

Profession can be simply defined as a pubic acknowledgment of what you believe. Therefore we can then conclude that a false profession is to do the opposite of what you have declared. In this case, we are talking about the profession of our faith in Christ. Do you make a false profession of your faith in Christ? Or, are you bold enough to declare Him your Lord and Saviour at anytime and anywhere?

Look closely at our Memory Verse. You will see there that Paul is referring to those who claim to be Christians and appear to be religious to do the right things yet do not have intimate personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ whom they claim to be their Saviour. Their lives, conduct and comportment are not characterised by the power of the Holy Spirit that set people away from sin and worldliness, selfishness and ungodly behaviours. Such people tolerate contrary behaviours and worldly lifestyles in their family, in the work place, at home, the environment, even in some churches, yet they claim to know God.

Take a time to pause and think deeply. Even in our physical world, how possible can you claim to be a soldier, policeman or fire fighter but you are not rightly dressed, you don't have the conduct or disposition of one, neither do you carry their identities? Nobody will believe you to be what you profess to be. The people will be quick to assume you are an impersonator. Are you engaging consciously or unconsciously in spiritual impersonation? Bragging or boasting, dressing and speaking like a believer of Jesus Christ when actually you are not one? Or perhaps a Christian but your life does not portray Christ in anyway?

Beloved, those who engage in false profession can also be termed hypocrites. Jesus said a lot about such people in the Bible when He was on earth. Matthew 23:23 says "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." Jesus would want you, as a reader of this devotional, to stand by what you profess. Be bold to declare: "I know whom I believe". Think, act and let the world see Christ in you. God is interested in your true profession of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. He wants you to act it out and not the other way round. False profession is sin. Nothing more!

THE MESSAGE:

As Christians, we are called to be outstanding and exemplary in our conduct, relationship and performance. Jesus is unequalled, so should we. This is not just at home but also in the workplace or anywhere we engage in our day to day activities.

Who are you, brother? Who do people call you, sister? Are you that Christian you claim to be in word and in deed? We are the salt and the light of the world, according to our Fire Scripture for today. Do you really shine the light of Jesus in that market place? How much value do you contribute to people and issues? Are you a sweetener or too bitter to swallow? Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, it is valueless. How much of Christ do you project in your business?

The Bible tells of Lydia, a business woman who not only believed in Christ but opened her home to the ministers of God, a demonstration of love and hospitality.

Do you engage in greedy gains in your business transactions? Do you get involved in bribery, corruption and other kinds of falsification? Is your measuring cup adjusted? How much of the scale have you tampered with? (Proverbs 11:1; 20:10, 23).

Beloved, the devil is the Prince of this world and is in charge of the disobedient ones. But you are different. Honesty and integrity are the hallmarks of God's children. Others may, but you cannot. It is God that gives wealth that prospers and endures. Any human attempt to manipulate will lead to eventual poverty and sin before God.

Anywhere a Christian finds himself  he has to make a difference like the salt and light of the world. He or she should be able to make an impact for Christ within the environment. Jesus spent a significant portion of His life among the unbelievers, fulfilling His redemptive purpose among them.

The Bible is full of practical business ideas that have proven effective in the work place since the beginning of time. The bottom line for Christian business and economic activities is not just financial (1 Corinthians 3:13-15) but eternal gains. Your business strategy must include conscious efforts to invite others to follow you as you follow Jesus.

As a business man or woman, you must allow the presence of God to dwell in your business premises and activities by practising holiness and righteousness in all your dealings. You must be empowered and controlled by the Holy Spirit, using your economic power as a means of expanding the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply.

PROPHETIC WORD FOR TODAY:

I DECREE THAT WHATEVER YOU LAY YOUR HAND UPON SHALL PROSPER, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

ESCAPE FROM THE SNARE OF THE FLESH (III)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 1 John 2:15-17

MEMORY VERSE:

John 16:33 "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

THE MESSAGE:

The term "world" (Greek cosmos), as it is used throughout the New Testament, often refers to the vast world system that exists independent of God (i.e. going its own way without regard for God), and basically opposed to God. It is how things in the world would have operated ever since the first humans gave in to satan's temptation, disobeyed God and brought the curse of sin upon all of creation. Because man defied God, human kind lost the authority over creation that God had originally delegated to them (Genesis 1:26-30, Genesis 2:15, 19-20). By this, satan seized control and began to dominate man's endeavours as well as his ideas and efforts with his evil purposes (John 12:31, 14:30.

Beloved of the Lord, the world as it is presently is characterised not only by wicked, immoral and selfish lifestyles, but also by a spirit of rebellion, indifference and nonchalance. That is, lack of interest, concern for the things of God, God's revelation and unresponsiveness. Majority have refused to submit to Christ's leadership and authority. In the Fire Scripture for today, that is why we are being warned about the love of the world or the things in the world. They have no eternal values, because all that is in the world will go with the world. They will be forgotten and will bring little or no reward to add value to your journey to eternity.

1 John 2:17b, the Bible says, "but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." Therefore, beloved of the Lord, to escape the snare of the world, you must do the will of God. You must love what He loves and hate what He hates with perfect hatred. There is no one that can serve two masters and succeed. You will love one and hate the other. You have the choice to make so that you can also be in eternity with God. The world is a form of spiritual adultery and unfaithfulness that defiles our relationship with God and leads to spiritual destruction.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

To escape the snare of the flesh, flee from all appearance of evil.

PROPHETIC WORD FOR TODAY:

ANY POWER THAT IS ON ASSIGNMENT TO TIE YOU DOWN TO THE WORLD SYSTEM SHALL FAIL WOEFULLY, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

1. Every unfriendly friend in the garden of my life, get out by fire, in the name of Jesus.

2. Everything that needs to die in my life for God to reign supreme, die by fire, in the name of Jesus.

ESCAPE FROM THE SNARE OF THE FLESH (II)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Matthew 4:1-11

MEMORY VERSE:

James 4:7 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

THE MESSAGE:

Man lost control of the authority over creation that God had originally delegated to him as a result of his disobedience. Thereafter, man became slave to the sin he brought into the world. The devil now began to dominate the earth with his evil purposes. He now patrols the earth as commander of a host of evil spirits through which he enslaves and keeps captive those who do not have a personal relationship with Christ.

1 John 3:8 affirms that Jesus came to earth to destroy the works of the devil, establish God's Kingdom and free us and all mankind from satan's power. One of the major themes in the gospel of Mark is Jesus' constant aim to defeat satan and demonic powers (Mark 3:27).

According to our text, the devil also came to tempt Jesus after forty days' and forty nights' prayer and fasting, showing Him (Jesus) all that he (the devil) has control over. The devil is also called the accuser or adversary. He was originally a great angel created perfect and good. He was appointed to serve around God's throne in heaven.

He became filled with pride and rebelled God. This now made him to become the primary enemy of God and of God's greatest creation, mankind.

Despite all his efforts against Jesus, he was defeated. Beloved, you too can escape his snares. You must keep in mind, however, that satan is not equal with God. He is just a created being and is limited by the supreme power of God.

Beloved, our Memory Verse is a way out of the snare of the devil, "Submit yourself therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). Submission to God is not negotiable. It will enable you to resist the devil and escape his snare, because he will flee from you.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

Submission to God is the key to escaping the snare of the devil.

PROPHETIC WORD FOR TODAY:

EVERY BATTLE TRYING TO PUSH YOU BACK TO THE DEVIL HAS ALREADY FAILED, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

1. O God my Father, break me down and remould me to what you want me to be, in the name of Jesus.

2. All the snares of the fowler set for my feet, catch your owner, in the name of Jesus.

4. Powers assigned to make me fail God, die, in the name of Jesus.

5. Satan, you will not harvest my soul, in the name of Jesus.

6. I am a winner and not a loser, in the name of Jesus.

7. Satan, get thee behind me, in the name of Jesus.

ESCAPE FROM THE SNARE OF THE FLESH (I)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Galatians 5:13-21

MEMORY VERSE:

Galatians 5:16 "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh."

THE MESSAGE:

The snare of the flesh refers to the human nature with its corrupt desires, resistance to God and insistence on going its own way. This has been in effect ever since the first man and woman disobeyed God and allowed sin to enter into the world and infest mankind (Genesis 3).

The sinful nature remains in Christians, even after they give their lives and decided to follow Jesus Christ. It continues as their deadly enemy battles against their spirit. The Bible says that "to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God" (Romans 8:6-8).

Anyone who continues to yield to the sinful nature cannot be a part of God's Kingdom. For this reason, this sinful nature must be resisted and put to death spiritually through a spiritual battle that Christians must fight and win through the power of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:17 affirms "For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would."

The act of the flesh are enumerated in our Text for today. They are the normal nature of the unregenerated heart because he finds nothing strange in committing adultery or fornication and giving pleasure to his flesh "But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth" (1 Timothy 5:6).

Beloved, our Memory Verse has enjoined us, "Walk in the spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." You must serve God in spirit, because God is a spirit. You must not give room to satan to rule your life through the flesh, because carnality is equal to death. Come to God today and you will not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

It takes the power of the Holy Spirit to break the tyranny of the flesh.

PROPHETIC WORD FOR TODAY:

EVERY GRIP OF UNGODLY POWER OVER YOUR LIFE SHALL BREAK, IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

1. Every spirit of carnality, depart from my life, in the name of Jesus.

2. Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me, melt me and remould me, in the name of Jesus.

3. Power to keep my body under control, fall upon me, in the name of Jesus.

4. O Lord, my Father, help me to be disciplined in every area of my life, in the name of Jesus.

5. Every spirit of disobedience in me, disappear, in the name of Jesus.

6. O God, arise and reveal to me the indepth knowledge of Yourself, in the name of Jesus.

7. Spirit of rebellion, I will not give you expression, come out of my life, in the name of Jesus.
