Jamie Oliver has accused Theresa May of missing "a massive opportunity" to avert generations of obesity - saying she has delivered none of the policy substance or the fanfare promised by former prime minister David Cameron.

The celebrity chef and campaigner said Mrs May's childhood obesity strategy - criticised by doctors, health campaigners and politicians when it was released while MPs were on summer recess - was a watered-down version of the assurances her predecessor signalled.

Mr Oliver, who has previously championed campaigns on reducing sugary drinks and improving school dinners, will hit out at the Government's plans on Channel 4's Dispatches programme, broadcast on Monday.

Speaking to the Press Association, the father of five said he made repeated efforts to help with the strategy - having been encouraged through several meetings with Mr Cameron - but felt his input was dismissed by Mrs May.

He said: "I have never met her, I have nothing against her, I wish her really, really well, I want her to be brilliant - but if you think that plan is amazing you would have put your name on it, and it wasn't.

"If you cared about it you would have celebrated it as a moment of pride.

"The launch we would have done with Cameron would have been a 'day', communicate it with the wider press and celebrities to say why this was going to be brilliant and celebrate it with the next generation.

"(Mrs May's strategy) was rubbish - none of that."

Asked about the apparent snub, Mr Oliver said: "I don't have delusions of grandeur. If you don't think I wouldn't rather be on the island of Sicily, cooking a nice little thing and doing some jazz hands for my living, I would be.

"I'm doing this because I've been touched and I have been exposed to things that really upset me in every town in every community.

"Any politician - if they can't put child health at the heart of their policies, they are not fit to do their job - end of story.

"All I can see thus far is, this childhood obesity strategy shows a massive lack of understanding.

"I just think she doesn't get it. Why did she not consult for a few more months?

"It's not in Britain's interests to have a PM in place that doesn't get it."

He said Mr Cameron was prepared to "stand up and be counted" in his commitment to tackling obesity. He added: "You don't have that with Theresa and I think that's the problem."

Mr Oliver urged voters to contact their MPs and the Prime Minister over their concerns about the strategy, with the hashtag #TellTheresa trending during a question-and-answer session by the chef on Facebook Live on Monday morning.

He said: "Even if your view is that you don't like me - that's cool, I don't expect you to like me, but you can trust me.

"I've been doing it for the last 11 years and I will continue to do it because I've only got your family's health at heart. Tell your MP that Theresa hasn't done enough for kids."

A Department of Health spokesman described the Government's published plan as "ground-breaking", adding: "No other developed country has done anything as ambitious.

"The Government has intentionally taken a careful and measured approach which will reduce obesity.

"We are taking bold action through the Soft Drinks Industry Levy to cut the amount of sugar consumed by young people. Alongside this, our restrictions on advertising and promotion are among the toughest in the world.

"These steps will make a real difference to help reverse a problem that has been decades in the making, but we have not ruled out further action if the right results are not seen."

Photos: Troops foil another suicide bomb attempt on Bakassi IDP camp in Maiduguri

At about 9.00am Sunday morning, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE deployed behind Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, Damboa road, Maiduguri, on security duty, intercepted and killed a male suicide bomber who had attempted to sneak through the troops’ inner parapet towards the IDP camp.

A statement by Army spokesman, Col. Sani Usman said the vigilant sentry sighted the bomber and laid in wait until the suicide bomber came close. The sniper instantly shot and killed the terrorist as he tried to force his way to the western flank of the IDP camp fence.

Unfortunately, the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) vest strapped on the bomber failed to detonate. Consequently, a combined team of military and police Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) have been called to safely detonate the IED.

The situation at the camp and the general area is said to be calm

Evangelist Bud Chambers, a gospel song writer, scripted some lyrics, "Born to serve the Lord," showing the totality of man's business on earth. He wrote, "From the dust of the earth, my God created man, His breath made man a living soul; and God so loved the world He gave His only Son, and that is why I love him with my soul". According to him, it would amount to a waste of precious life to abandon the very essence of our living here on earth. He believes disobedience to the will of God will attract eternal punishment. In this concluding part of the book of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon reminds everyone that the purpose of our creation is to fear God by doing His will. He also reminds us that every work of man would be judged. Although man may invent other purposes for his existence here on earth, one incontrovertible fact is that any invention of man cannot distort the purpose of God. In the Garden of Eden, God made man a living being to praise Him, day in day out. But when man sinned, that purpose of his creation was distorted. Through the first Adam, sin reigned in us; but we are made alive by the second Adam, Jesus Christ. It was the first coming of Christ that brought man back to that initial purpose. The frontiers of God's grace are available to those who are desirous of knowing His divine purpose for their lives. Many people live as though they have no purpose in life. It is only lower animals that death terminates their existence eternally. As for man, at death, he begins another journey either in heaven or hell. That's why the way we live our lives today matters a lot. The Lord will bring all our works to judgment as our text truly reveals. It is instructive today that you abide in sobriety and discover God's purpose for your life.

Her father, Muktar Shagari was one of the longest serving Ministers during the Olusegun Obasanjo regime and also served as the deputy governor of Sokoto State for 8 years.
Saleh is an enterprising businessman, with some successful businesses to his credit.

Preparations are already in top gear for this grand event which is set to take place in the capital city, Abuja, before the end of the year.

This sad incident happened in Abuja recently. According to the story being told by her close friends, the lady pictured above is the proprietress of a school, Chelsea International School in Abuja. She was allegedly kidnapped by her driver and some of his friends, raped and then buried in a shallow grave.

Investigations by the police led to the arrest of the said driver and his friends. They led the police to the shallow grave where they dumped her body. Her remains was later exhumed. See more photos and the sad video after the cut.

ACTS 8:9-25

"And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money" (Acts 8:18).
Countries across the globe spend a huge money trying to fight the spread of counterfeited products. Regulatory agencies deploy men and materials to rid the society of these unwholesome products. But in most cases, fake products appear genuine on the face value. Most times, innocent and unsuspecting members of the society are deceived by the fantastic presentation of such injurious products, whereas they are valueless. Many people therefore, lose huge sums of money to purchase fake products thinking they were paying for the genuine ones. This was the case in the city of Samaria when Simon the sorcerer held sway. He enjoyed great fame while the shenanigan lasted; but the truth was revealed with the arrival of Peter and John into Jerusalem. Although he knew he was fake, Simon the sorcerer still went ahead to demand the transfer of the apostle's power on him to enable him continue to make merchandise of the people. Before now, Simon was respected by everyone in Samaria; he had made much money for himself that he commanded respect. But he could not withstand the genuine power in Peter and John. In order to deceive the fickle-minded, some counterfeit miracle-workers claim to possess the power to heal and perform all manner of miracles. Today, many people parade fake testimonies and powers. They, like Simon, are very bold even in their wickedness. Such fake pastors in our contemporary times lay claim to what they do not possess. Those who deal in counterfeits are enemies of both God and the society. They kill innocent souls through their nefarious activities. Just as it does not make any economic sense to patronize those who deal in counterfeit products, trusting in fake Christian experiences will only lead to eternal death. We must always endeavor to go for the real thing.

Thought for the day: No matter how enticing a counterfeit product appears, it remains worthless.

Striker Lucas Perez faces six to eight weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury, but midfielder Aaron Ramsey is in contention to make his long-awaited return against Sunderland, manager Arsene Wenger said on Friday.

Spaniard Perez, who has scored twice for Arsenal since joining from Deportivo La Coruna in the summer transfer window, limped off in the second half of Tuesday’s 2-0 League Cup victory after a tackle by Reading’s Danzell Gravenberch.


Wales international Ramsey, whose only Premier League appearance this season came in the 4-3 defeat by Liverpool during which he suffered a hamstring injury, has been included in the squad for Saturday’s trip to the Stadium of Light. Wenger felt that the tackle on Perez was deliberate, and could have been avoided. “We lost Perez for a while with an ankle injury.


Hopefully he will recover but I think it will be six-eight weeks out,” Wenger told reporters.


“We have (Olivier) Giroud back, Aaron Ramsey will be in the squad. Very frustrating he (Perez) worked very hard to get there. He’s absolutely gutted, it’s an injury that came from nowhere. The Arsenal trio to help beat Sunderland

 

Another weekend of Premier League action is about to kick-off with things at both ends of the table taking form.


At the top of the table, Arsene Wenger and his Arsenal side are right in the thick of the title race with just goal difference keeping them behind Manchester City but also above Liverpool. Behind those three, Chelsea and Spurs are within a win of them so slip ups cannot be afforded right now.


Conversely, down at the bottom of the table, Sunderland, Arsenal’s opposition this weekend, are struggling. The Black Cats have yet to record a Premier League win this season with David Moyes still getting to grips with his new side and they are beginning to get cut adrift – they are five points off of safety.


Nevertheless, no game in this division easy and Arsenal will have to perform if they want the three points. Here, then, are the three players we think will help ensure that they do.........

Newly discovered emails related to an investigation into a private email server used by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton were found on a separate device during an unrelated probe, a U.S. government source said on Friday.

The FBI said on Friday it will investigate the additional emails that have surfaced, in a new twist to the U.S. presidential campaign with 11 days to go before Election Day.

Talk of Clinton winning Texas has GOP craving reality check

 
HOUSTON (AP) -- It's no surprise that Hillary Clinton hasn't gambled much on Texas, a state no Democratic presidential candidate has won in 40 years. What's surprising is the scare she's giving Republicans anyway.
Growing talk over whether Texas is truly in jeopardy for Donald Trump has become another distress signal for the billionaire's campaign, which is already fighting to hang onto Utah and Arizona, two other typically reliable GOP strongholds.

Clinton is pouring millions of dollars into television ads in Arizona; Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, campaigned this week in Salt Lake City. Such dead giveaways of a competitive race are harder to spot in Texas, but narrowing public opinion polls have made Republicans anxious as early voting numbers surge to record levels.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wasted no time addressing the elephant in the room at a small rally in Houston days ago.

"Texas is being tested by Hillary Clinton," Abbott said. He went on to fire up supporters for 10 minutes without once mentioning Trump's name.

A Democrat hasn't won Texas in a presidential race since Jimmy Carter in 1976, and Democratic nominees have been trounced by double digits the last four times. Barack Obama lost Texas by 12 percentage points in 2008 and 16 in 2012.

But Trump's struggles and soured Republican voters have long-suffering Texas Democrats now daring to dream what seemed unimaginable only a few months ago. Texas' 38 electoral votes are a must for a Republican presidential nominee in any election year, to say nothing of Trump, whose razor-thin path to victory makes Florida a must-win even though Clinton can prevail without it.

"I believe the race is competitive," said Austin-based Republican consultant Brendan Steinhauser, who ran Texas Sen. John Cornyn's last re-election campaign. "Rural Texans go for Trump. But the suburbs are going to be a potential huge problem for him."

Whether Clinton really does have an opening in Texas, there's no doubt enthusiasm is high. The first two days of early voting were up 49 percent in the biggest counties compared with 2012.

But there are few signs of Trump becoming defensive enough in Texas to spend much time or money to protect that GOP turf. Likewise, Clinton isn't pulling out the stops for an upset.

Clinton caused a stir in Texas this month by buying airtime for commercials - something Obama never bothered doing in the state this close to Election Day, Nov. 8. But federal disclosures show only a handful of spots in Houston and Dallas, where it would take millions of dollars to saturate airwaves. Meantime she's spent $2 million on television advertising in Arizona and sent first lady Michelle Obama there to campaign for her.

"We look at everything with clear eyes," said Manny Garcia, deputy executive director of the Texas Democratic Party. "We know how hard it is to change this state." He said he understands the enthusiasm from Democrats hoping to see Texas flip, an achievement that would rock the political world. "When you see that moment in Texas," he said, "it's game over, nationally."

Talk of Texas being in play comes just two years after Abbott and a ticket of brash tea party candidates in statewide races humiliated Democrats. One such Democrat was Wendy Davis, who lost her run for governor by 20 points despite a national fundraising apparatus and a campaign co-piloted by the architects of Obama's re-election.

Stacey Mendoza, a 50-year-old homemaker in the Houston suburb of Katy, left Abbott's rally unfazed by Democrats who think they have a chance this time. But as she carried out a new Trump sign to put outside her house, she said Republicans need to push back in Texas, even though a Democrat hasn't even won a statewide office since 1994.

"I've heard some people don't want to put Trump signs in their yards," she said. "I'm not afraid." She added: "I pray about it, too. I'm a believer."

On the other end of Houston, James Smith left an early voting site at a supermarket believing Clinton can carry Texas. "It'll show everyone that anything can happen," he said.
